MADISON, Wis. -- Madison police officers, park rangers and others were nearly struck by fireworks while trying to disperse a large crowd at Elver Park Thursday night.

A Madison Police Department spokesperson said officers responded to a report of a fight at the park at around 9:20 p.m. They arrived to find about 500 people lighting fireworks around the park.

Police and park rangers tried to close down the park but multiple people allegedly launched fireworks at them. Multiple people were almost hit but nobody was injured.

Madison Fire Department crews were called in to extinguish smoking and live fireworks. Firefighters gathered up fireworks and brought them to the middle of a parking lot. They doused a 50-gallon drum of smoldering trash before leaving the scene.

Police said the incident was ultimately resolved without any arrests.
