'I'll be supporting the entire Democratic ticket': Tammy Baldwin campaigns in Dane Co after missing Biden visit

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -- When President Joe Biden touched down in Madison on Friday, there was a lineup of Wisconsin Democratic leaders waiting to welcome him. But there was one notable absence.

"Look, I'm focused on my own campaign right now," Senator Tammy Baldwin told News 3 Now at a campaign stop in Sun Prairie Sunday afternoon.

Instead of greeting the president on the tarmac at the Dane County Regional Airport, Baldwin spent her Friday making stops on her "Fired Up for Tammy" campaign tour.

"People have been planning the meet and greets and rallies that we've been having for weeks, and I was going to show up," Baldwin said. "I wasn't going to be a no-show for those important events."

On Friday, her campaign told reporters her absence from Biden's visit shouldn't be taken as an absence of support for his campaign. On Sunday, when asked if she thinks Biden should consider dropping out of the race, she again told reporters she was simply focused on her own campaign.

"I've been engaging voters throughout the state of Wisconsin and getting people excited about the upcoming election, but you know, the bottom line is, it's his decision, and I'm going to be fighting for the entire Democratic ticket," Baldwin said.

But she says she has heard concerns about Biden's run from voters on the campaign trail.

"I have heard a lot of input from voters, a lot of things that they've been, you know, expressing, and I've passed those on to the White House," Baldwin said.

As for whether concerns about Biden could impact her campaign and other down-ballot races, Baldwin says she hasn't seen a decline in momentum.

"We don't know what the future holds, but I am definitely focused on, first of all, winning my own reelection, because I want somebody who's fighting on behalf of the people of the people of Wisconsin," Baldwin said. "I'm very excited about all these candidates that we're seeing at the grassroots level now that Wisconsin has fair maps who are doing the work they need to do to reach voters and get them interested in the campaign. I'll be supporting the entire Democratic ticket."

According to the most recent Marquette Law School Poll, Baldwin is leading with support from 52% of registered voters to Republican candidate Eric Hovde's 47%.
