Order the August Issue: What's wrong with 'The Most Studied Lake in the World'?

Lake Mendota is called ‘The Most Studied Lake in the World’ — rightfully so, since it’s the birthplace of limnology, the study of lakes, in North America. But its algae bloom-covered shorelines, like many other lakes’ in Madison, are a telltale sign of serious lake health issues.

In this month’s issue, Bill Graf explores the factors contributing to Madison’s worsening water quality — which include climate change and contaminants from Wisconsin’s many farms — and the ongoing efforts to use science to right the ship and protect one of our city’s greatest assets.

Also in this issue, Jeff Oloizia covers a breakthrough therapy for Alzheimer’s disease that has researchers, clinicians, and caregivers confronting an unfamiliar emotion: hope. For the more than 120,000 Wisconsinites living with Alzheimer’s and dementia (and an aging Baby Boomer population projected to double that number in the next 25 years) promising new drugs can’t come soon enough.

Pick up the issue on newsstands July 31 or order a single copy of the issue here .

    Some additional August stories include:

STOCK YOUR BEACH BAG: Our summer reading list has 30-plus new titles from Wisconsin authors, plus a sneak peek of fall releases.

BATTLE OF THE BRANDS: Buc-ee’s, is building their first location in Wisconsin. Will the Texas-based truck stop chain dethrone Kwik Trip as the favorite gas station for locals?

FANCY GOES FAST: The owners of fine-dining supper club The Harvey House switch gears with their new family-friendly chicken shop.
