UW Health expands emergency stroke care

MADISON, Wis. -- UW Health announced Friday it has made significant developments in its emergency stroke care, after receiving an " Acute Stroke Ready Hospital" certificate.

UW said it received the certificate in late June, indicating that the hospital achieved a high level of stroke response and met the requirements of The Joint Commission for timely patient assessment and treatment. The hospital was greenlit to expand its dedicated stroke response program, which will employ evidence-based protocols, improve data collection, train specialized staff in acute stroke care, implement quality improvement initiatives, and establish strong emergency medical service collaborations with local agencies.

For people in Madison's east side experiencing a stroke, UW Health said the certification also allows faster response times for treatment. East Madison Hospital, in particular, has "tele-stroke" capabilities, where a stroke neurologist can examine the patient through a video feed and view brain scans in real time.

UW Health said the certification also streamlines processes for patient transfers to University Hospital in downtown Madison, a Comprehensive Stroke Center, whenever needed.
