Pocan calls on Biden to drop out of presidential race

MADISON, Wis. — Dane County Congressman Mark Pocan Friday joined a growing list of Democrats calling on incumbent President Joe Biden to step out of his race for reelection.

Pocan, D-Town of Vermont, wrote a joint message with three other members of Congress, Jared Huffman (California), Marc Veasey (Texas), and Chuy Garcia (Illinois), addressed to Biden.

"Mr. President, with great admiration for you personally, sincere respect for your decades of public service and patriotic leadership," the group wrote.

"At this point, however, we must face the reality that widespread public concerns about your age and fitness are jeopardizing what should be a winning campaign," they added.

The group did not explicitly name who they want to see replace Biden on the ticket, but said that Democrats have a deep bench led by Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris will visit Wisconsin next week on the heels of the Republican National Convention, traveling to Milwaukee on Tuesday.

On Friday Biden released a campaign statement reacting to former President Donald Trump's nomination speech on Thursday, saying Biden looked forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week.

"I look forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week ... while making the case for my own record and the vision that I have for America," Biden wrote.
