MADISON, Wis. -- A record number of Madison Metropolitan School District students took at least one Advanced Placement test at the end of the 2023-24 school year, with the majority of tests taken resulting in a passing grade.

District officials announced Tuesday that 1,845 MMSD students took at least one exam, up 191 students from the district's previous record. Those students took a total 3,803 AP tests, 602 more than the previous high.

The district's pass rate for this year's exams was 76% and students averaged a score of 3.4 out of 5.

"As a district, we encourage students to push themselves in the classroom," MMSD executive director of secondary programs and pathways Mary Jankovich said. "We are heartened by the steady rise we have seen in our AP participation rate."

The College Board, which administers the AP tests, considers any score of 3 or above as a passing grade. Many universities around the country allow students who achieve passing scores to translate those scores into credit hours.
