Madison College biohealth tech hub set to bring jobs to Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- President Joe Biden announced Wisconsin was one of the 31 regions picked to be tech hubs and Madison College is of of the 15 members throughout the state selected to help in that effort. That move could have a big impact on southern Wisconsin.

Over the next 5 years Madison College will receive $350,000 in grant funding to serve as a biohealth tech hub. The funding is a part of the federal CHIPS and Science Act passed in 2023.

"Madison College has been in biotech for a long time. Grant funding will leverage those relationships we already have and really scale what we're doing at a bigger scale to support a growing industry," says Mark Thomas, Chief Strategic Officer for Madison College.

Biohealth covers a wide rand of needs, from treatment technologies such as imaging and MRI's; research and development of those technologies; as well as training to be a part of those industries.

"The growth in the health sector is never going to stop, is never really complete. So, while the grant funding will be spent over a five-year timeframe and will certainly accelerate the growth in the industry over that five-year timeframe, you know, we're thinking about the impact over the long term," Thomas says.

And long term projections say this will bring an influx of jobs to the area.

"They project within the next decade or so...a little bit beyond that five-year grant period, 30,000 quality jobs will be created directly in the bio health sector and then up to another hundred thousand jobs in indirect and adjacent industries."
