'I think it's enticing people to vote': The effect of Kamala Harris participating in online trends

MADISON, Wis.-- Kamala Harris is going viral on multiple social media platforms for her team's participation in social media trends.

One of those trends is 'Brat Summer.' Harris can be seen in edits to remixes off the pop album Brat by British singer Charli XCX. The term 'Brat,' unlike its traditional meaning, refers to something as positive or iconic.

Kathleen Culver, the director for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at UW- Madison, said although the trends won't have a huge impact on Harris' campaigning, they will start a conversation.

"I think it is smart for any campaign to capitalize on energy," she said. "I think what this social media attention and amplification is going to do is probably get more people off the couch."

Gen-Z voters in downtown Madison on Thursday said they were excited to see the participation from Harris' team.

"It's good to have a little joke associated with politics instead of us just being bored," said 19-year-old Liv Golat.

Others also said they thought it could entice their generation to pay closer attention to politics.
