MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art announced Thursday it will close out the summer with a rooftop cinema series.

Combining its summer film series with its Rooftop Sculpture Garden, the MMoCA said the series will provide a serene setting for exploring critically acclaimed and award-winning films from across the globe. Each week will offer a new film perspective with dazzling animation, subversive interventions, unique comic visions, and dynamic documentary.

The MMoCA said films in the event lineup include:

    • "Chicken for Linda!" on Aug. 8, an animated film from France and Italy. Paulette promises her daughter Linda a meal of chicken with peppers, but when a general strike closes all stores in town, Paulette must embark on a journey to find chicken elsewhere.
    • "One Hand Don't Clap" on Aug. 15, a vivid documentary from the U.S. Explore the rise of calypso and soca music in Trinidad and Tobago, where the festivities culminate with an annual competition between top calypso singers for the title "Monarch of the Year."
    • "Hello Dankness" on Aug. 22, a comedy from the U.S. that takes a satirical look at American politics from 2016-2021, as experienced by a fictional suburban neighborhood. The film is told entirely through altered clips from movies, TV shows, and media sources.
    • "Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles" on Aug. 29, an animated feature film from Spain, tells the true story of an artist hunting for his purpose and confronting the specter of mortality.
    • "The Films of Robert Downey, Sr." on Sep. 5, from the U.S. closes the MMoCA's lineup with showings of "Chafed Elbows" and "No Excuses." Downey's unique comic vision shines through, despite small budgets and limited equipment.

The MMoCA said t ickets are $7 per screening, or free for museum members and minors. Ticket sales begin at 7:30 PM on the r ooftop , and films start roughly 20 minutes after sunset. Filmgoers are welcome to bring a blanket or portable chairs to use. Snacks, including fresh popcorn, will be available for purchase at the event. Films will move to the Museum Lecture Hall in inclement weather.
