Officials state life saving measures were administered but were unsuccessful, prompting a call to the Hopkins County Coroner along with detectives with Madisonville Police.

The victim was identified as Christian Crook, 23, of Madisonville, and after further investigation, it was believed the preliminary cause of death was a suspected fentanyl overdose.

Detectives were able to make contact with 29-year-old Jawan Combs of Madisonville on June 6 in Mt. Carmel, IL, and during an interview, officials state Combs admitted to selling Crook multiple suspected fentanyl pills.

Officials state on July 1, detectives received the autopsy report from the State Examiner’s Office, and the opinion ruled the cause of death to be fentanyl intoxication.

As a result, Combs is being charged in reference to the death. He is facing Trafficking in Controlled Substance and Manslaughter charges.
