Since 1981, the Madras Sparklers have raised money and organized the fireworks display in town on July 4th.

The fundraising effort was initially focused on the “mom-and-pop” businesses that used to dominate the Madras-area commercial scene, and through contributions from the general public. Now there are fewer and fewer mom-and-pop business in town, and more and more of the contributions are coming from individuals.

Mike Ahern was an original member of the Sparklers back in 1981, along with Dan Phillips and Jodie Eagan. He is now a one-man Sparklers fireworks operation, handling the fundraising and the ordering of the fireworks. This year’s budget for the Madras fireworks is $18,000, the largest in event history.

“The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate America and all of what our great nation stands for,” said Ahern. “This is the day to put away extreme political positions and unite as Americans. We need to reflect on our proud past as we focus on our bright future.”

The Sparklers is the only organization raising money for the Madras fireworks show. To donate, send a check to Madras Sparklers, 1219 NE Upper Drive, Madras, OR 97741. Contributions are also accepted via a Gofundme account. Go to Gofundme.com and search Madras Sparklers.
