One person has been arrested after a suspect stole a police car and then led police on a chase.

WTOK in Meridian reports that a Meridian Police vehicle was stolen early Monday morning while officers responded to a call on Highway 11 & 80.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. when officers exited their vehicle to investigate a report. While they were out of the car, the suspect took advantage of the situation, jumping into the police cruiser and fleeing the scene.

A high-speed chase ensued, with officers pursuing the suspect along Highway 39. The pursuit ended near the Kemper County line when the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department deployed spike strips, causing the vehicle to crash.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was immediately apprehended and is now in custody. Authorities say the individual is facing multiple felony charges related to the incident.
