Bill to Impose Higher Taxes On Empty Honolulu Homes Postponed
(AP) – A Honolulu City Council bill that would raise taxes on vacant homes has been postponed indefinitely. The move came Wednesday after disputes over what constitutes an empty home and what city services should benefit from any revenue generated. Proponents of the measure say it would help ease Honolulu’s housing crisis by encouraging owners of empty homes to rent or sell their properties that could then be used for long-term usage. The core idea of the bill has broad support, but officials have struggled over details of how it should work. Council member Matt Weyer postponed the issue, but says he intends to bring it up again for more discussion.
