Houston — Hurricane Beryl devastated the
Houston area on
Monday , leaving over one million without power three days on. With
CenterPoint Energy’s outage map going down earlier in the week, many have turned to an unlikely source that’s pure Texan; the
Whataburger app .
With over 700 locations in Texas – 165 in the greater Houston area – Whataburger’s “ Locations ” tab within the app works well as a makeshift outage tracker based on the chain’s placement of restaurants in the area. Locations currently open and operating are designated with the typical orange Whataburger logo marking its place on the map. Locations closed are marked with a gray Whataburger logo, which is likely due to being without power.

As frustrations mount with CenterPoint Energy’s response to Beryl, or lack thereof, it’s led to many choosing alternate methods for relief or information during the ongoing crisis.
This isn’t the first time CounterPoint Energy’s outage map has gone down, as the feature experienced “technical difficulties” following the derecho that tore through the area in May, according to The Houston Chronicle .
