The 14-year-old suspect involved in the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, Colt Gray, and his father, Colin Gray, will remain in custody after their legal teams chose not to request bail during Friday’s court proceedings.

Colt faces four counts of murder after allegedly using a semi-automatic rifle to kill two fellow students and two teachers at the school. His father is also facing charges for providing the firearm to his son, continuing a growing trend of holding parents accountable for their children’s involvement in school shootings.

“Everyone in this community is a victim,” said District Attorney Brad Smith outside the Barrow County courthouse. “Every child at that school was impacted.”

During the hearing, Colt appeared in shackles, dressed in khakis and a green shirt, as the charges against him were read. The judge initially misspoke, stating that Colt could face the death penalty, but quickly corrected it, confirming that as a minor, the maximum sentence he could receive is life without parole.

Colin Gray, 54, was also brought before the court, answering questions about his role in the tragedy. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder for giving his son access to the firearm, despite knowing the potential risks.

Authorities revealed that Colt used a “black semi-automatic AR-15 style rifle” during the attack. However, the motive remains unclear, and law enforcement has yet to disclose how the weapon was brought into the school.

The victims include students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, along with teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. The community has been devastated by the loss, with renewed calls for tighter gun storage regulations.

This case echoes the recent Michigan trial where the parents of a school shooter were sentenced for failing to secure their firearm and overlooking signs of their son’s deteriorating mental state. Following the Georgia shooting, other schools in the area have received threats, adding to the growing fear surrounding school safety.

Additional charges are expected for Colt, and both he and his father’s cases will be presented to a grand jury in October. Colt is due back in court on December 4 for further proceedings.
