When I told my husband we were going to see A Christmas Story, he was not too thrilled. "You mean the one with Tiny Tim? ugh." When I told him it was in fact the "You'll shoot your eye out" show his face lit up. "I love that movie!"

Growing up, we've must have seen that movie 100 times between the two of us. In many ways, it is the rebel to A Christmas Carol. Though both stories end on a happy note, getting there is quite different. A movie based on a boy's desire for a BB gun vs a wealthy scrooge's ghostly journey to philanthropy.

Here's why you and your family / friends need to see A Christmas Story, this holiday season.

    1. It is true to the original

When I got my tickets to A Christmas Story at the Theatrical Outfit, I was wondering would it be like the orignal movie? Or would they modernize it to fit the times? Does it have the part with a tongue stuck to a pole? The dog / turkey incident? The famous leg statue? Yep, so true to the original and they were able to do it all with one stage set!

    2. You can enjoy it with your (over age 10) kids

If you have kids around 10 or older that didn't grow up watching it, this is a terrific opportunity to bond with them (no cell phones allowed). Both adults and kids will get laughs as this story seems to transcend decades. Certainly don't be that person who brings their toddler to the show! Yes, someone rudely thought it would be ok to have their toddler whining the majority of a show.

    3. You can sing along

Ok, I'm not much of a singer. I love music and singing alone in the car - which is about it. However, when the narrator encouraged the audience to sing Jingle Bells in the opening, I couldn't help but get in the Christmas spirit. And you will too!

    4. We need joy now, more than ever

The world is embroiled in a battle of good vs evil. The terrorist attacks committed against Israel have left many of us in shock, horror and sadness. With a 24/7 news cycle, it is hard to feel joy, in the face of such brutal atrocities. I believe by finding our little pieces of happiness, we don't let the enemy win. It's different than watching the movie on tv. You'll get dressed up, perhaps go out to a nice meal and not be distracted by your phone.

    5. Not politically charged

Over the last 10 - 15 years, there tends to be a politically motivated nuances in movies and theatre. I, for one, can't stand it. No matter what side of the spectrum it is, I don't want to hear it when I am trying to enjoy a show. I just want to be entertained. And that's exactly what you get with A Christmas Story.

The show is playing Thursdays through Sundays through December 24th. Buy tickets to A Christmas Story here.
