Despite gun violence on the rise in Florida, the Florida House Committee recently passed a bill that will allow 18-year-olds to buy firearms. The current law does not allow anyone under 21 to purchase guns.

I interviewed three Tampa residents to get their thoughts on this important issue.

The Issue: Bill Will Allow 18-Year-Olds to Buy Guns

The bill, HB1223, would will allow 18-year-olds to buy guns. If passed, it will go into effect on July 1, 2024.

According to the bill's analysis, it will, "reduce the minimum age requirement to purchase a firearm from 21 to 18, which applies to purchases from either a federal firearms licensee, also known as an FFL, or a private seller."

    3 Tampa Residents Speak Up

I interviewed three Tampa residents to gather their perspectives on the recent Florida House Committee bill that would allow 18-year-olds to buy firearms. Here's what they said:

John stated, "People mature at different rates, and there are plenty of responsible 18-year-olds who should have the right to purchase guns for self-defense or sporting purposes. If they can get drafted, they should be able to purchase a gun. Age should not be the sole factor in determining who can exercise their Second Amendment rights."

Sarah stated, "I strongly disagree with this bill. Allowing 18-year-olds to buy guns is reckless and dangerous. At 18, many individuals are still in high school and may not have the maturity or life experience to handle the responsibility of gun ownership. This bill could lead to an increase in gun violence, school shootings, and tragic accidents involving firearms."

Emma stated, "I think it's great, as long as they are strict with background checks and training requirements for anyone purchasing a firearm, regardless of age. We need to balance individual freedoms with public safety."

What do you think? Do you think that they should lower the age for people to buy guns? Let me know in the comments below.
