Flooding has been a recurring issue in the town of Mamaroneck for years, leaving residents feeling frustrated and vulnerable. But a new study offers potential solutions, and some projects are already underway to address the problem. The town has been grappling with flooding during heavy rainstorms for years. "We all lose a little bit of sleep every time it rains, it's scary," says Alex, a Mamaroneck resident. "It's almost like there isn't anything to be done, it's in mother nature's hands." To tackle the issue, town officials enlisted the help of an engineering firm to assess the situation and develop solutions. The firm's report, presented at a public meeting Tuesday night, included recommendations like updating aging piping, improving infrastructure, and creating new drainage options. One project already underway is located just off Waverly Avenue, where a bridge is being replaced and a nearby waterway is being widened. "I don't think at this point there are quick fixes. I'm not sure the flooding is going to go away, but at least we can reduce the severity and frequency," says Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Jaine Elkind. The next step for the town is to determine which projects are feasible and how to fund them, including exploring potential financial assistance from the county and state. "
