MONMOUTH COUNTY, NJ — Jim Lonergan has always looked ahead.

Starting at 8 years old, Lonergan, who grew up in Garden City, Long Island, started throwing papers for Newsday.

“I grew up in a wealthy town, we weren’t wealthy and I think that helped instill in me this work ethic that I had to work harder to get ahead," Lonergan said.

Following undergrad at Villanova University and an MBA at Fordham, the self-described “grinder” went to work with one mission in mind: making an impact wherever he was.

“The goal was to keep moving forward,” Lonergan said, as he started a career focused on media and content strategy.

Lonergan led many media and information companies as president, CEO or COO, including digital financial company TheStreet and Thompson Reuters, formerly Thomson Financial.

Now, he’s the publisher of TAPinto Gold Coast, the newest TAPinto local news and digital marketing platform, which launched in May 2024. It serves the Jersey Shore communities of Spring Lake, Spring Lake Heights, Sea Girt, Manasquan and Brielle.

“To me, media publishing strategy and the next level has always been my interest level for sure,” Lonergan said. “TAPinto fits into that pretty well.”

"We are excited to have veteran media executive Jim Lonergan and his son, join our TAPinto family of publishers,” TAPinto Founder and CEO Michael Shapiro said. “We are also thrilled to help bring objective local news to another news desert in the State of New Jersey, and in Monmouth County, in particular."

After living in New York City, Lonergan moved to New Jersey more than 30 years ago. He lived in Millburn, then Chatham, where he served three terms on the borough’s council. For nearly 25 years, he has lived either full or part-time at the Jersey Shore.

Lonergan says he looks forward to serving his friends and neighbors with hyperlocal reporting and content in their communities.

Now, decades later, Lonergan still reflects on that paper route on Long Island and how hard work made a difference.

“I took a real small territory and grew it into the largest territory in the 35-person office,” he said.

Not a lot has changed between now and then.

“I’m a grinder,” Lonergan said. “100% still a grinder.”  If you are not signed up to receive free TAPinto daily news, click here for easy signup!
