Karen Read murder case: Judge sets 2025 date for retrial
A Massachusetts judge has scheduled the retrial in Karen Read's murder case for early next year, three weeks after declaring a mistrial in the high-profile case. Read was accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, in January 2022. Prosecutors allege she hit O'Keefe with her car and left him to die in the middle of a snowstorm after the two got into an argument earlier in the day. Judge Beverly Cannone declared a mistrial in the case on July 1 after the jury said it was unable to reach a unanimous consensus on the fifth day of deliberations. The Norfolk District Attorney's Office said following the mistrial that it planned to retry the case. During a status hearing on Monday, Cannone proposed Jan. 14, 2025, for a pretrial conference and Jan. 27, 2025, as the new trial date.

Karen Read's next trial set for January 2025
Karen Read's next murder trial is set to start in early 2025. Why it matters: The high-profile case over the death of Read's boyfriend, Boston Police officer John O'Keefe, continues after a mistrial was declared earlier this month. State of play: Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone set a trial date of Jan. 27, depending on whether Read's defense team can clear the date. One of Read's attorneys has to confirm he won't have a conflicting trial that starts in Essex County earlier that month.Yes, but: The defense will make the case to dismiss two charges — second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident — against Read at an Aug. 9 hearing. Read's attorneys said earlier this month four jurors came forward to say the jury unanimously deemed her "not guilty" on those charges, but were split on whether to find her guilty of manslaughter while driving under the influence. The defense argues trying her on those charges again would constitute double jeopardy.
