Karen Read's next trial set for January 2025
Karen Read's next murder trial is set to start in early 2025. Why it matters: The high-profile case over the death of Read's boyfriend, Boston Police officer John O'Keefe, continues after a mistrial was declared earlier this month. State of play: Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone set a trial date of Jan. 27, depending on whether Read's defense team can clear the date. One of Read's attorneys has to confirm he won't have a conflicting trial that starts in Essex County earlier that month.Yes, but: The defense will make the case to dismiss two charges — second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident — against Read at an Aug. 9 hearing. Read's attorneys said earlier this month four jurors came forward to say the jury unanimously deemed her "not guilty" on those charges, but were split on whether to find her guilty of manslaughter while driving under the influence. The defense argues trying her on those charges again would constitute double jeopardy.

Woman gets probation for calling in hoax bomb threat at Boston Children's Hospital
A Massachusetts woman has been sentenced to three years of probation for calling in a fake bomb threat at Boston Children’s Hospital as it faced a barrage of harassment over its surgical program for transgender youths. Catherine Leavy pleaded guilty last year in federal court to charges including making a false bomb threat. Authorities say the threat was made in August 2022 as the hospital was facing an onslaught of threats and harassment. The hospital launched the country’s first pediatric and adolescent transgender health program. The U.S. attorney’s office announced Monday that she had been sentenced on Thursday. Her attorney, Forest O’Neill-Greenberg, didn’t immediately respond to a request seeking comment. The hospital became the focus of far-right social media accounts, news outlets and bloggers last year after they found informational YouTube videos published by the hospital about surgical offerings for transgender patients.

Karen Read in court as judge schedules January retrial in Boston police officer's death
BOSTON (AP) — Karen Read made a brief court appearance on Monday to set dates going forward for the high-profile murder case against her involving her Boston police officer boyfriend that ended in a mistrial earlier this month. Read is accused of ramming into John O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him for dead in a snowstorm in January 2022. Her two-month trial ended when jurors declared they were hopelessly deadlocked and a judge declared a mistrial on the fifth day of deliberations. The judge will hear oral arguments on a defense motion to dismiss two of the three charges against her on Aug. 9, and a retrial was scheduled for Jan. 27. The court hearing lasted just a few minutes. A boisterous crowd of several dozen, many dressed in pink and carrying signs claiming Read is innocent, greeted her with cheers as she arrived at court. A smaller group of about 20 people, dressed in blue, came out in support of O’Keefe.

Karen Read murder case: Judge sets 2025 date for retrial
A Massachusetts judge has scheduled the retrial in Karen Read's murder case for early next year, three weeks after declaring a mistrial in the high-profile case. Read was accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, in January 2022. Prosecutors allege she hit O'Keefe with her car and left him to die in the middle of a snowstorm after the two got into an argument earlier in the day. Judge Beverly Cannone declared a mistrial in the case on July 1 after the jury said it was unable to reach a unanimous consensus on the fifth day of deliberations. The Norfolk District Attorney's Office said following the mistrial that it planned to retry the case. During a status hearing on Monday, Cannone proposed Jan. 14, 2025, for a pretrial conference and Jan. 27, 2025, as the new trial date.
