ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – The Manchester-Shortsville Central School District announced the approval of its new mascot — the Red Jacket Cardinals.

The name change follows consultation with stakeholders including students, staff, alumni, and community members. The name ‘Cardinals’ ended up being the clear choice recommended by the Rebranding Committee.

The districts focus will now turn towards the development of a new logo. Until this new logo is designed, the district will continue to use the current ‘RJ’ logo with plans to unveil the new Cardinal themed logo in the upcoming school year.

Prior to this change, the district’s mascot was orignally the “Indians,” but they had to change it after New York’s Board of Regents ruled that schools could not use Native American references as mascots, logos, or names.
