MANDAN, ND ( KXNET ) — The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has awarded the City of Mandan a Community Challenge Grant of $10,500 for the purchase and installation of 25 new bike racks.

“We are seeing interest in additional biking, recreation, and being outdoors,” noted Andrew Stromme, Mandan City Planner. “It’s been identified in previous plans that having additional bike racks in Downtown Mandan would be beneficial to provide additional options for accessing the destinations, the events, the services, restaurants, and other businesses in Downtown Mandan.”

The grant will allow the city to increase the number of bicycle racks available as well as replace older ones already in place. This month, they are asking residents to take a short survey to provide feedback that will help them determine where to locate the new racks that would best serve the cycling community.

Stromme adds that they have plans to purchase hitching post-style bike racks that would replace the traditional style racks. He says the newer racks will be anchored into the ground, and allow for different types of bicycles to be secured and supported.
