When photographer Lucas Brito Drumond first moved to Hell’s Kitchen, he discovered that our neighborhood has more churches than any other in Manhattan. Intrigued by this unexpected spiritual abundance, Lucas embarked on a mission to capture the essence of these places of worship for his Photoville Festival exhibition, Faith in Hell’s Kitchen .

Originally from Brazil, Lucas has a knack for immersing himself in the history and culture of his surroundings whenever he moves to a new place. Upon discovering the wealth of religious institutions in Hell’s Kitchen, Lucas told W42ST, “I don’t think people realize how many churches are in the neighborhood, especially because the name [of the area] is Hell’s Kitchen.”

After countless hours documenting these sacred places, Lucas discovered the invaluable role they play in the community. Beyond their religious significance, the churches of Hell’s Kitchen serve as vital hubs for food distribution, senior services, and community events, embracing people of all faiths with open arms.

Among the stars of Lucas’s exhibition are Sacred Heart of Jesus (W51st bw 9/10th Ave)and the famed St. Malachy’s, affectionately known as the Actor’s Chapel (W49th bw Broadway/8th Ave). Lucas was warmly welcomed by Reverend John Fraser and his team, who graciously allowed him to capture the essence of their beloved chapel.

Amidst the array of captivating images, one in particular stands out to Lucas—a touching moment between a mother and child, “That one is really special. It’s a big contrast from what people usually think of when talking about Hell’s Kitchen — such a beautiful moment.”

Lucas’s photographic journey doesn’t end with Faith in Hell’s Kitchen . With the completion of his Master of Professional Studies in Digital Photography from the School of Visual Arts, he’s gearing up to showcase his next project: capturing the everyday lives of Hell’s Kitchen residents. From bodegas to busy street corners, Lucas is eager to shine a spotlight on the vibrant tapestry of life in this beloved neighborhood.

Faith in Hell’s Kitchen will be on view until June 16 at Photoville Festival 2024 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
