A Hell’s Kitchen Post Office at W52nd Street was at the center of a major mail theft scheme, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Friday.

Postal worker Destiny Anderson, 35, and her partner Anthony Johnson, 34, have been indicted for allegedly stealing credit cards and checks worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from the mail. The duo reportedly sold the stolen items or used them for personal gain. Anderson, a United States Postal Service (USPS) employee stationed at the Radio City Post Office at 322 W52nd Street (between 8/9th Avenue), and Johnson face multiple charges in a New York State Supreme Court indictment.

The indictment charges Anderson from Queens with two counts of Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree and one count of Conspiracy in the Fifth Degree. Johnson from Brooklyn faces one count of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, three counts of Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, one count of Attempted Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, and one count of Conspiracy in the Fifth Degree.

“We allege Destiny Anderson and Anthony Johnson brazenly stole checks and credit cards from the mail for their own personal gain. This type of conduct can be extremely harmful to the many Manhattanites who depend on reliable mail service for their paychecks or other important financial documents,” said DA Bragg. “Public employees who take advantage of their jobs at the expense of others will be held accountable.”

Special Agent in Charge Matthew Modafferi, of the USPS Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Field Office, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Postal Service. “The conduct alleged is disgraceful, and our office will continue to vigorously investigate Postal Service employees and their co-conspirators who violate the public’s trust.”

Inspector in Charge Daniel Brubaker of the USPS Inspection Service New York Division also commented on the case: “It is always disheartening when the theft of US Mail and identity theft is committed, especially when these alleged crimes are committed by someone that betrays the trust of the American public and blatantly disregards their duty to reliably deliver our customers’ mail.”

According to court documents, the scheme operated between May 14, 2021, and March 10, 2022. Anderson, stationed at the W52nd Street Post Office, allegedly stole envelopes containing credit cards or checks while performing her duties. Johnson reportedly encouraged and directed her actions. The stolen items, including checks worth $387,000 and $21,500, were used for personal benefit or sold through platforms like Instagram, with payments received via Zelle or CashApp.

The stolen credit cards were used to purchase items at high-end stores such as Yves Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta, as well as B&H Photo, BJ’s Wholesale and Duane Reade.

    * The charges contained in the indictment are merely allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. All factual recitations are derived from documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court.
