TIMES SQUARE, Manhattan (PIX11) — July is Fibroids Awareness Month and a local nonprofit held its annual event Thursday, aimed at not only raising awareness but also supporting women battling the condition.

It was a powerful evening of solidarity as attendees leaned on each other at the Fibroids Fighters Foundation’s fourth annual ‘Night in Bloom’ event. Eugenia Buie, of Westchester County, shared her story of battling fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths inside the uterus, for decades.

“When I was working out I used to feel like maybe I’m dehydrated,” Buie said. “Come to find out it was actually the fibroids because the blood supply that’s supposed to be going through your body was actually being harvested by the fibroid.”

Buie is now an ambassador for the nonprofit. She hopes her story will allow other women to know they’re not alone on their journey to recovery.

“When I was able to identify that I wasn’t alone because I had somebody that could be going through what I’m going through, I said, ‘Oh no,’” said Buie. “I have to do my part in helping my sisters get free. I might not know you but we’re still sisters. I don’t care what color you are.”

The event, held at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, was marked by empowering speeches from notable names like Bravo TV’s Cynthia Bailey. She highlighted both the struggle millions of women face daily and the importance of raising awareness.

“A lot of women still don’t know what options they have to actually get on the other side of fibroids,” Bailey said. “A lot of women still think that hysterectomy is the only answer and that is absolutely the last resort you should ever take.”

According to Dr. Yan Katsnelson, who founded the nonprofit, 40 million women experience fibroids across the country. He wants women to know about all available treatment options, including uterine fibroid embolization.

“80% of black women and 70% of white women by age of 50 develop this condition,” Dr. Katsnelson said.”

Organizers hope these powerful stories of resilience will inspire a community of hope, as the nonprofit continues its unwavering commitment to education and support for women’s health.
