The hidden ancient forest discovered in Manitowoc County — and more of the latest from Streetwise

The sun is out as Streetwise writes this newsletter, and I bet all farmers are glad for that.

One of my best-read stories recently focused on the record-breaking rain Manitowoc County (and most of Wisconsin) received in the month of May and its impact on farmers. May was among the top 10 rainiest months in history for the county — and the wetness means farmers can’t get out into the fields.

Readers also engaged with my story about a forest — nearly 13,500 years old — buried in the Two Creeks area by glaciers. Researchers discovered some tree wood that likely came from that forest. It’s on display at a local museum.

I also did a few stories that reflect the strength of the Lakeshore area’s recovery community — always a good thing to see.

One article focused on Lighthouse Recovery’s new director and drop-in center. The other highlighted a Manitowoc couple raising money to build a recovery home with a piece they see missing in the community’s current homes.

Finally, Streetwise did a story featuring an iconic Manitowoc industry and its impact on history. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is home to a cool display of old submarines that played a part in D-Day in Normandy, France.
