    Events to check out this week at Manitowoc Public Library include National Night Out and zoo animals

    MANITOWOC – The city’s National Night Out event will be at the library Aug. 6.

    Here’s a look at that event and everything else happening at the Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., this week. For more information, call 920-686-3000 or visit manitowoclibrary.org .

    At the library this week:

    • Library closing early — 5 p.m. Aug. 1. The library will close early and reopen for regular hours the following day at 9 a.m. Aug. 2.
    • Teen Hang-Out: Let It Burn! Survival Fires with the Woodsy Dude — 1-3 p.m. Aug. 2. Learn to start a survival fire with Joshua Stuck, the Woodsy Dude. While this program is open to everyone ages 12-18, participants ages 12-17 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required. Head to www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/let-it-burn to secure a spot.
    • A Patchwork of Stories: Sharing Caribbean Culture, with Baptiste Paul — 10:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 3. Born in St. Lucia, Green Bay author Baptiste Paul will share the patchwork of his colorful culture during an author event in the Balkansky Community Room.
    • Learn About Libby: The Online Reading App — 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 5. The Libby app gives you access to thousands of free eBooks, audiobooks and magazines that you can read online. This class is free for all ages and no registration is required.
    • Sew What! — 4-5 p.m. Aug. 5. Can't sew? Sew what! Kids and teens are invited to this crafty workshop, where endless possibilities await. All supplies provided.
    • National Night Out — 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 6. Join Manitowoc Public Library and the Manitowoc Police Department for National Night Out in the Balkansky Community Room. This annual community-building campaign promotes police-community partnerships to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places. Activities include learning about crime prevention and family safety; making a child ID kit; meeting a police officer; seeing police and fire vehicles; and watching a K-9 demonstration.
    • It’s a Zoo at the Library — 2-3 p.m. Aug. 7. Join zookeeper Vicki Rathsack in the Balkansky Community Room to learn and interact with some of the special animals that live at Manitowoc’s Lincoln Park Zoo.
    • Drop-In Chess Club — 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 7. All abilities and ages (6 years and older) are welcome, but no formal instruction will be offered. Boards are provided and library materials are available for further learning. No registration required.

    Story times:

    • Baby Storytime — 9:30 a.m. Aug. 1, 7 and 8. For developmental ages 0-2 and their siblings.
    • Preschool Storytime — 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1, 7 and 8. For developmental ages 2-5 and their siblings.

    Things to do this week: A free family concert at Washington Park and more events to see and do

    Ongoing events and programs:

    • Summer Reading Program — Runs through Aug. 10. Read or be read to a total of 30 days to complete the program and earn weekly prizes just by reading.
    • “American Farmer: A Photo-Portrait Exhibition” — On view through Oct. 20 on the library’s first floor. Features 45 full-color and black-and-white portraits and interviews with farmers across the United States by photographer Paul Mobley.
    • Employment and career assistance — Department of Workforce Development staff provide on-site services in MPL’s Franklin Street Room for both employment assistance and career counseling between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesdays. Drop-in employment assistance includes resume writing, help with online applications, assistance registering in Job Center of Wisconsin, and more, and no is appointment needed.
