A Mankato man has pleaded guilty in the U.S District Court on Wednesday to possession of a firearm as a felon after shooting at police officers following a series of violent home invasions.

Court documents show that on January 14, a woman called 911 to report a man that had broken into her apartment in south Minneapolis. The woman and her two children escaped the apartment after the suspect, Kamau Evans, 32, broke a window and crawled into the woman’s bedroom.

Evans then broke into a second home in north Minneapolis by shattering a sliding glass door, assaulting several of the residents once inside, including holding an older woman and young child hostage and threatening to kill them, according to one of the victims.

Officers of the Minneapolis Police Department arrived at the second residence and pulled one of the victims out of the house. Officers then entered the home behind a ballistic shield and while walking upstairs, were shot at by Evans who was on the top of the stairwell.

Evans tried to escape by leaping out of a bathroom window and ran through the backyard before being caught by police and arrested. Officers confiscated a SCCY model CPX-1 9mm semiautomatic pistol at the side of the garage where Evans was arrested.

Evans attempted to shoot at several victims, and pistol whipped one, which led to her having to receive seven staples in her head.

Because Evans was previously convicted of a felony in 2002, he is not allowed to possess firearms or ammunition at any time. Evans pleaded guilty on Wednesday in U.S. District Court to one count of possession of a firearm as an armed career criminal. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for August 22.
