'Pride or die:' Queer Northshore champions LGBTQ+ support in rural Louisiana
Mel Manuel and Jeremy JF Thompson struggled to meet other LGBTQ+ folks when they moved to Covington three years ago. Having previously lived in New Orleans, Manuel and Thompson, who both use they/them pronouns, felt out of place in a less urban and more conservative region. Manuel, 40, and Thompson, 43, decided to create their own LGBTQ+ safe space. Two and a half years ago, the best friends co-founded Queer Northshore, a nonprofit based in St. Tammany Parish, to promote LGBTQ+ visibility, community and acceptance in Louisiana’s northshore region.
Early morning fire destroys residence in Shreveport mobile home park
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Shreveport fire crews responded to Friday’s early morning fire in the Lakewood Village Mobile Park. According to SFD, Engine 9 arrived at the scene within six minutes of the fire call, which came in at 4:46 a.m., and reported a single-wide manufactured home fully involved in flames. Ultimately, SFD 22 firefighters operated eight units were needed to get the fire under control by 5:09 a.m.
