    Week 1 Roundup: Plymouth, Lucas roll to dominant season-opening victories

    MANSFIELD — Week 1 is in the books.

    Let's check out how Richland County football teams did in their first action of the 2024 season as well as some scores of interest from around the area with the Week 1 Roundup.

    Plymouth 31, Oberlin 0

    The Plymouth Big Red got its 2024 campaign started off with a 31-0 win over Oberlin on Friday night.

    Plymouth did not allow a single first down and only allowed 16 total yards of offense while creating two turnovers in the most dominant defensive performance of the week.

    The Big Red offense was just as good, piling up 288 yards of total offense with 260 yards rushing and 29 passing. Ethan Keefe led the way with 107 yards on the ground.

    The Big Red got on the board first with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Lincoln Distl to Keefe. Owen Wright added a 2-yard touchdown run followed by a Distl TD from a yard out. Keefe put the finishing touches on the victory with a rushing TD.

    Plymouth starts the year 1-0 and travels to Willard in Week 2.

    Lucas 48, Smethport (PA), 12 (Saturday)

    The Lucas Cubs rolled four and a half hours away from home on Saturday and came home with a solid 48-12 win over Smethport to open the season in a big way.

    The Cubs ran for 446 yards on 50 carries and threw for 106 yards for an impressive 552 yards of total offense. Brady Anshultz led the way with 123 yards on eight carries while Bobby Grover completed 4-of-5 passes for 106 yards. Zac Winters caught three passes for 72 yards. Buck Arnold provided the highlight defensively with a 73-yard interception return for a touchdown.

    The Cubs start the season 1-0 and host Hillsdale in Week 2.

    Perkins 55, Clear Fork 0

    The Clear Fork Colts ran into a buzzsaw on Friday night with a 55-0 Week 1 loss to Perkins.

    The Colts managed just 37 yards of total offense for the evening. Porter Schmidt led the Colts with 11 yards rushing on four carries while Nick Appleman had 10 yards on 10 carries. Marcus Hoeflich went 4-for-9 passing with 11 yards and two interceptions. Jay Jackson caught all four passes for 11 yards.

    The Colts are now 0-1 and travel to Granville in Week 2.

    Seneca East 35, Crestview 20

    The Crestview Cougars suffered a tough season-opening loss to Seneca East on Friday night, 35-20.

    Junior quarterback Liam Kuhn completed 6-of-49 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown while fellow junior Lane Robinson completed 3-of-5 passes for 51 yards and a score. Ayden Reymer ran for 138 yards on 18 carries with a score while Gavin Barker added 21 yards on six carries. Karter Goon was the top receiver with three catches, 44 yards and a TD and Tyson Ringler added two catches for 40 yards and a score.

    Jack Stephens led the way defensively with nine tackles while Logan Friges and Xaver Stuhldreher had seven tackles with one going for a loss. Ringler and Barker also had one tackle for a loss apiece. Barker had the lone sack for the game.

    The Cougars fall to 0-1 to start the year and host Kirtland on Thursday in a big Week 2 matchup.
