'We came out and just embraced it': Shelby stays undefeated in a storm-filled win over Highland

MARENGO — Inclement weather forced Shelby and Highland into a physical downhill game.

It was the undefeated Whippets who found success behind the junior duo of quarterback Brayden DeVito and running back Marcus Gumbert that lead them to a 41-6 victory over the Scots.

The dual-threat DeVito knew coming in that the rushing attack would have to be on point due to the weather.

“We came out and just embraced it, something that we can’t control is not going to stop us," said DeVito.

DeVito accounted for five scores, (three rushing and two passing). He finished with 221 yards through the air and an interception; and added 89 more on the ground. Gumbert finished with 115 yards and a score. His one touchdown being a huge 50-yard run on the Whippets first drive of the game.

“I thought those two kids played hard tonight, obviously Brayden is a guy we can rely on, and Marcus has emerged as a second option. With those two, I think you also have to talk about those guys up front who played really well,” said Shelby coach Rob Mahaney.

The entire area was feeling the distant effects of Hurricane Helene, and it was no different in Merango. The rain poured for most of the first half, and the wind continued all night. It made it difficult for both teams to throw the ball.

“With the wind blowing and the rain you get to rely on your guys up front, and then Brayden and Marcus made some huge plays,” said Mahaney.

But make no mistake, the Shelby defense was all over Highland. Quarterback Kolton Stover and the Scots finished with 22 passing yards on just four completions. Although it was difficult to throw in the weather, Highland is a team that is usually pass-first.

“Our back four always does a great job, I think we were able to challenge them because of the weather and press a little bit,” Mahaney said.

Highland was able to find a spark in senior running back Sam Hernandez. He finished with 16 carries for 73 yards, including the only Fighting Scot score, and added an interception on defense. Hernandez’ score came from Highland gaining great field position, when Shelby muffed a punt and the Scots took over on their own 8-yard line.

The Fighting Scots didn’t help themselves any by adding unofficially five penalties for 40 yards. Highland falls to 2-4 on the year.

Shelby stays undefeated and moves to 6-0. Now is no time to let of the gas.

“We can’t become complacent, we have to get better each and every week and put our best foot forward,” said DeVito.

Shelby takes on River Valley at home next week.
