Franklin General Authority gets $3.1M EPA grant
The Franklin General Authority has been awarded a $3,182,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency’s sewer overflow and stormwater reuse municipal grant program. The EPA said the money will help fund the upcoming A-108 combined sewer overflow remediation project, which will rehabilitate or replace 55,000 feet of the combined sanitary sewer system in the City of Franklin, separating the stormwater and sanitary sewer systems.
Conservancy river sojourn planned Aug. 2
The Allegheny Valley Conservancy will host its annual Allegheny River Sojourn on Friday, Aug. 2, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the SaltBox Visitor Center in Franklin. Participants need to bring a kayak or canoe and a life jacket. The event includes a float to Fisherman’s Cove, a shuttle back, and a presentation on the Allegheny River’s value. Registration, due by July 26, costs $40 and includes a shuttle and refreshments at TrAils to Ales II. Kayak rentals are available through OARS. Register at avc-pa.org or by mail.

Franklin wastewater project receives $22M in funding
The Franklin General Authority has secured $22 million in funding from PENNVEST for the initial phase of a significant wastewater project in Franklin. This project, receiving $16.72 million in grants and $5.28 million in low-interest loans, aims to rehabilitate 55,000 feet of the existing system and separate combined sewers to reduce overflow into French Creek. If successful, further phases may not be needed. Additionally, the authority discussed the aging wastewater treatment plant, which faces issues like clogging from disposable wipes. While solutions and replacements are being considered, no decisions were made at the meeting. Other approvals included payments for ongoing projects, agreements for equipment storage, participation in a feasibility study, and litigation related to PFAS chemicals. Future meetings will temporarily relocate due to upcoming HVAC work at City Hall.

The value of faith based/private school’s in the Burgh
The debate between public and private schooling continues to thrive. While both options provide quality education, the value of a private school education is at the forefront for some local parents. Many private schools have a strong emphasis on instilling moral and ethical values, fostering a sense of responsibility, empathy and respect in their students. This approach aims to mold students who not only excel academically but also contribute positively to society. Susan Fariss is an educator and parent of a 15-year-old freshman who attends Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School in Oakland. “Central Catholic provides a very warm and welcoming environment, not only for students, but parents as well,” says Fariss. “We chose a private education because my husband attended Central Catholic and had an incredibly positive experience.” Fariss wanted their son to experience the same sense of brotherhood and camaraderie that they feel is part of the Central Catholic culture. The close bond is the norm at Central Catholic, shares Fariss. Another benefit the Fariss family has found at Central Catholic is that the school provides more student diversity than their home district. There are students from over 60 different school districts that attend the high school this year, and of those, approximately 35 schools sent just one student from this academic freshman class. Students have the benefit of meeting peers from a wide geographic area with diverse backgrounds.
