Marblehead fireworks canceled after fire on barge, officials investigating

The fire department is asking the public for any pictures of videos of the fire while they investigate.

Officials are investigating the cause of a late-night fire on a fireworks barge in Marblehead that canceled the town’s annual display.

The Marblehead Fireworks Committee announced around 10:30 a.m. on the Fourth of July that their annual celebration — which included flares illuminating the harbor’s perimeter — was canceled.

“There was a fire on the barge in the middle of the night, and the cause of the fire has not been determined yet,” the committee said. “Fortunately, nobody was on the barge at that time and there were no injuries reported, as far as we know.”

Their plan on July 4 was to launch fireworks off of the barge at the mouth of Marblehead Harbor around 9 p.m. Instead, the event was canceled, and residents with flares were asked to return them to the Marblehead Fire Department. All other holiday events were ahead as scheduled, the committee said.

The department is looking for any pictures and videos from the barge fire, they said in a Facebook post on the Fourth. They said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Images can be sent to [email protected].

The Marblehead Fire Department confirmed to Boston.com on Sunday evening that they are still collecting information to assist in their investigation.
