Nothing is more frustrating than going to a restaurant with a hearty appetite only to discover that the restaurant will be closed for the next two days.

This has happened to me on a couple of occasions. Like me, Virginians have learned to check the schedules of restaurants they intend to visit because many of them are closed on Monday and Tuesday, and there are valid reasons for that.

Restaurant closings on Monday and Tuesday

Restaurants may close on Monday and Tuesday for several reasons, including:

    • to give the staff a well-deserved break after a busy weekend
    • to allow workers to recharge after the weekend's early starts and late finishes
    • to do deep cleaning after large weekend crowds
    • to take inventory, order fresh deliveries, schedule staff, and plan for another busy week
    • to conduct meetings and train new employees

    Slow day for restaurants

Mental Floss notes that restaurants are usually the slowest at the beginning of the week. In Virginia, that usually includes Mondays and Tuesdays, which typically see the lowest volume of customers. That explains why customers often find their favorite restaurant closed early in the week.

Restaurant owners have discovered that opening their doors on Monday and Tuesday doesn’t make much financial sense. Most locally-owned establishments don't want to pay their staff for standing around with nothing to do on Monday and Tuesday.
