According to Patch Virginia, many stores have closed in Virginia so far this year, and more are expected to close by the end of the year. Retail data provider CoreSight reported that there has been a 24 percent increase in store closures as the retail industry adjusts to a shift in consumer shopping to online outlets, inflation, and bankruptcies.

CoreSight reported that at least 3,200 brick-and-mortar stores, including some in Virginia, have closed so far this year, and more are expected to close by the remainder of the year.

Stores that have closed include anchor stores such as Macy’s and other mall apparel stores, drugstores, and discount stores.

Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, told CBS MoneyWatch:

“A lot of this year's closures are related to bankruptcies of chains that have been in trouble for a while, like Rite Aid and rue21. We’re also seeing several retailers, like Family Dollar, take action to weed out underperforming locations.”

Family Dollar closed 620 stores, including two in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The list of closures also includes traditional mall stores. Clothing retailer rue21 announced it would close all 540 of its stores as part of Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. That includes 21 of the casual teens and young adults apparel stores in Virginia.
