Hopewell High School student died during football practice

8 News reported that a 15-year-old student died after experiencing a medical emergency during football practice at Hopewell High School on Monday, August 5, 2024.

Students and family members met with the Hopewell school board seeking answers about what happened that led to Jayvion Taylor's death on school property.

Death under investigation

Hopewell administrators said the sophomore student collapsed and died after a “medical emergency” about 40 minutes into football practice. His death is still under investigation, but officials consistently insisted coaching staff followed safety protocol.

A board member at the meeting said there is a significant shortage of athletic trainers. Board members also said that Taylor’s death was unrelated to the recent issues with the air conditioning at Hopewell High School. The air conditioning was not working on Monday, making parts of the building so hot that classes were canceled on Tuesday.

Taylor’s aunt said that all she was hearing from administrators was excuses regarding her nephew's death. She urged investigators to look into proper coaching certifications and CPR protocol.
