Sharp’s Island is a secluded getaway on the James River in Richmond, Virginia. It is open to the public and can be rented for nightly stays.

    Owners of Sharp’s Island

Sharp’s Island, about one acre of land, is located a quarter mile from the Mayo Bridge between downtown Richmond and Manchester neighborhood.

Ten families and Andy Thompson own Sharp's Island. Seven years ago, a local real estate agent and Thompson's neighbor sent him the listing for Sharp’s Island. It motivated him to find people who would be willing to pitch in to buy it. Most people’s reactions were either skeptical or disinterested. However, Thompson had enough people to purchase the island along with himself.

    About Sharp's Island

Thompson describes the island as a slice of paradise.

    He says:

"You could be working in a high-rise building in downtown Richmond and get out of work early on a Friday, get in your kayak, and be in a different world.”

Sharp’s Island is the only legal true campsite within city limits. Its cabin is at the highest point of the island. The shingles are installed in a “starburst” pattern stemming from windows, openings, or center points along the outer walls.

Other amenities on the island include an outhouse, an outdoor kitchen, a picnic table, and a free library with island-themed books and media inside.

Visitors have endless options for spending time on the island. Time there can be used for fishing, camping, grilling, parties, corporate retreats, and art exhibitions.
