As of August 2024, many stores in Virginia have closed or are closing soon, including some of Virginian's favorites.

    Big Lots

In August 2024, Big Lots announced the closure of nine Virginia locations. The closure is part of a plan to close up to 315 stores nationwide or about a quarter of the company's locations. Big Lots CEO Bruce Thorn said the company's first quarter 2024 earnings report showed a $205 million net loss and might not be able to meet the terms of a credit agreement.

    Rite Aid

In July 2024, Rite Aid announced the closure of 24 Virginia locations. That closing is part of a larger plan to close 699 stores nationwide and is part of the company's restructuring to reduce debt after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023.

    CVS Pharmacy

CVS Pharmacy has also been closing stores in Virginia, and pharmacy executives cite inflation, low reimbursement rates, and increased competition.

    More stores to close

More stores in Virginia and worldwide are expected to close by the end of the year.
