Ruth's Chris Steak House has over 140 locations worldwide. One is located at 11500 W Huguenot Road, Midlothian, VA 23113.

History of Ruth's Chris Steak House

Ruth Fertel, a divorced mother, needed money to send her two teenage sons to college. In 1965, Ruth ignored the advice of her banker, lawyer, and friends and mortgaged her house for $22,000 to buy a small 60-seat restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was named Chris Steak House after the owner, Chris Matulich, who founded the restaurant on February 27, 1927. That was close to Ruth's birthday. Therefore, she took that as a sign to purchase Chris Steak House even though it had failed six times under the previous owner. On her first day, May 24, 1965, she sold 35 steaks at $5 each.

When a fire destroyed the restaurant, Ruth was forced to change the original location, and she renamed the restaurant by adding her name to the original name. Today, thousands know it as“Ruth's Chris Steak House.” Ruth's recipes remain the same, but the prices are much more than her $5 steaks in the past.
