Delicious burgers are a staple in Virginia. Some places specialize in burgers. They are also on menus in almost every restaurant.

    About What-A-Burger

What-A-Burger in Virginia began over 67 years ago with entrepreneur brothers Jack and Paul E. Branch Jr. and other members of the Branch family. They had a brilliant idea to open their first location at a busy traffic circle in Newport News, Virginia.

They soon established additional locations in Richmond, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg, Virginia, each along busy through-traffic highway corridors. A Branch family member opened another location in the 1950s in Greenville, South Carolina.

    What-A-Burger today

The above photo shows the ingredients in the classic, hearty burgers at What-A-Burger when the establishment first opened. At the time, the big burgers were only 35 cents.

Today, consumers can still get the classic, hearty burgers at What-A-Burger, which costs so much more.

What differentiates a What-A-Burger from other burgers is the burger bun's size, which is much bigger than buns in typical fast-food restaurants.

The large burger is a meal by itself. However, a bonus is getting a side order of the specialty crinkle golden and delicious fries.

    My first visit to What-A-Burger

My first visit to What-A-Burger was back in the 1960s. A college friend and I visited the one at 9901 Jefferson Davis Highway, North Chesterfield, VA 23237. We did not have enough money for separate meals. Therefore, we shared a burger and an order of fries. It was enough for both of us. That brings back memories every time I pass by that What-A-Burger.
