WRIC 8 News reported that some schools across Central Virginia will see an increased presence of law enforcement after a deadly school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia.

    School officials' reactions

Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras addressed families on ‘X’ about the recent school shooting in Georgia.

"My heart breaks at the news of the school shooting in Georgia. I’ve got nothing insightful left to say on this topic. It just needs to stop. RPS families, please note that I’ve asked RPD for an increased presence at our high schools tomorrow out of an abundance of caution."

On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook a message to make the community aware of the increase in police presence in all schools across the county in the coming days.

Hopewell City Public Schools Superintendent Melody Hackney echoed a sentiment of sorrow on the division’s Facebook page.

"It is with a heavy heart that I address you following the tragic school shooting in Georgia. As your superintendent, and as a fellow parent, I share the deep sorrow and fear that events like this bring. While no words can truly ease the pain, I want to assure you that we are fully committed to doing everything possible to keep your children safe each day."

    Superintendent Hackney added:

"Please know that the safety and well-being of your children remains our top priority. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, and we will continue working together to create a safer environment for all."
