Loaded gun found in 6-year-old's backpack in Orange Elementary School

WRIC 8 News reported that a loaded gun was found in a 6-year-old elementary student’s backpack on Monday, September 16, 2024, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 12:50 p.m., an Orange Elementary School staff member contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office about a loaded gun that was found in the school.

According to the sheriff’s office, the School Resource Officer and School Administrator retrieved the backpack with the gun.

Soon after the gun was found, the school went into safe school mode. No threats were made before the gun was found, and no one was injured. According to the sheriff’s office, no arrests have been made, but the investigation is still underway.
