Recently, I read about a popular fine-dining restaurant named Molasses Grill in Halifax, Virginia. It brought back memories of my childhood in Sussex County, Virginia.

My family was poor, and we often ate molasses because it was cheap, and it went a long way in our family of ten children. My mother used to pour molasses on a plate. We would sop it up with bread and eat it. That was our breakfast on many mornings.

    About Molasses Grill

I was surprised to learn about Molasses Grill, a popular restaurant at 63 South Main Street, Halifax, Virginia 24558. Molasses Grill is owned and operated by Chef Steven Schopen, his wife, Karen, and three of their four children.

Originally from England and Michigan, the Schopen family decided to open their restaurant in Southside Virginia in 2005 after falling in love with Halifax County and the local flavors of the region.

    Molasses Grill menu

Every dish on the menu is made in-house and reflects an aspect of Southern Virginia. The Schopens prepare house-made sausages, breads, and other dishes with bourbon and molasses.

    When I visit Molasses Grill

I live in Richmond, Virginia, which is two hours from Halifax. Whenever I get a chance to visit the restaurant, I will order a plate of molasses and a piece of bread and sop it up for old-time sake.
