The Charles City County Sheriff's Office posted a warning about stealing items from someone's yard on its Facebook page.

    The warning reads:

"Going into someone's yard and stealing a bicycle or stealing a lawn mower, anything that's in their yard, on their property, is theft and it's the same thing with a campaign sign."

The post also stated that anyone who steals a campaign sign from someone's yard could be charged with three criminal acts:

    1. trespassing
    2. theft
    3. destruction of property

Anyone who commits the above criminal acts could be fined, jailed, or both. The Charles City County Sheriff's Office's post ended with this reminder:

"While we try to control the issue, we want to simply remind people that facing charges for a petty crime isn't worth it. Anyone caught damaging, defacing, or stealing any political sign will be charged accordingly."
