WRIC 8 News reported that Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards says property crime rates are on the rise in the city. He made that statement during a crime briefing earlier this week.

    Crimes in Richmond, Virginia

Property crime increased compared to last year. Here are the rates for property crimes as of September 30, 2024.

    • shoplifting up by 16%
    • burglaries increased by 9%
    • motor vehicle thefts have risen by 4%

The above rates are troubling figures, but here are some positive developments:

    • thefts from vehicles decreased by 11%
    • thefts of car parts and accessories dropped by 27%

The Richmond Police Department is taking proactive measures in response to the rise in property crimes. It will host a steering lock giveaway on October 19 as part of its efforts to combat vehicle theft and enhance community safety.

    What are property crimes?

    According to Wikipedia:

"A property crime is to obtain money, property, or some other benefit. This may involve force or the threat of force in cases like robbery or extortion. Property crimes can be divided into two groups: destroyed property and stolen property."
    • Property crimes may include burglary, larceny, theft, arson, shoplifting, and vandalism.
    • Property crimes are different from crimes against people. They are crimes against the destruction or theft of people's property.
