About 253K people moved from Virginia last year: Where did they go?

WRIC 8 News reported that 253,000 people moved away from Virginia in 2023, according to newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Where did all those Virginians go?

Where did Virginians go?

The 253,000 people who left the Old Dominion in 2023 were fewer than the previous year when about 282,000 people left. According to the latest state-by-state migration data, here is a list of where most Virginians moved.

• 28,000 moved to Florida
• 25,555 moved to North Carolina
• 21,670 moved to Maryland
• 15,837 went to California
• 14,137 now call Texas home

People moving to Virginia

The U.S. Census reported that while 253,000 people moved from Virginia last year, 276,000 moved into the state. That was a little more than the 266,000 who relocated to Virginia in 2022.

The above list shows that 21,670 Virginians moved to Maryland; however, 28,203 moved to Virginia from Maryland. About 28,000 Virginians moved to Florida, but 24,733 Floridians moved to Virginia. While 25,555 Virginians moved to North Carolina, 23,197 people from North Carolina moved to Virginia.

This clearly shows that while people are moving out of Virginia, others are moving into Virginia.

Other statistics about the population of Virginia

Last year, Virginia received a total of 54,407 residents from other countries. While Virginians moved to other parts of the country last year, North Dakota was the only state where no Virginians decided to call home.
