A New COVID Variant is Spreading Fast in the US: These Are Its Most Common Symptoms

    2023-12-20

In recent weeks, the United States has seen a rapid spread of a new COVID variant, JN.1. This variant, a direct descendant of the previously known strain BA.2.86, is now responsible for over one-fifth of all COVID-19 infections in the country. As we approach the peak respiratory virus season, it's crucial to stay informed about JN.1, its characteristics, and how it affects us.

    The Rise of JN.1

JN.1 has quickly become the second-most prevalent COVID-19 strain in the U.S., following the HV.1 subvariant. Originating from the omicron family, JN.1 is a mutation-rich variant that has raised concerns due to its rapid growth and potential to evade immunity.

    Symptoms of JN.1

Currently, no evidence suggests that JN.1 causes symptoms different from other COVID-19 variants. The common symptoms include:

    • Sore throat
    • Congestion and runny nose
    • Cough
    • Fatigue
    • Headache
    • Muscle aches
    • Fever or chills
    • Loss of taste or smell

The severity of these symptoms largely depends on individual health and immunity levels. While severe infections can occur, most cases tend to be milder.

    Transmissibility and Public Health Impact

JN.1 is considered highly contagious, potentially more so than its parent variant BA.2.86. However, it does not pose a significantly increased public health risk compared to other circulating variants. The concern lies in its ability to replicate effectively and possibly evade pre-existing immune responses.

"Right now, we do not know to what extent JN.1 may be contributing to these increases or possible increases through the rest of December," the CDC said.

All standard COVID-19 tests, including rapid antigen and PCR tests, effectively detect JN.1. Testing remains crucial, especially during the holiday season.

Regarding vaccination, the updated COVID-19 vaccines are expected to offer increased protection against JN.1. These vaccines, targeting various omicron strains, also help reduce the disease's severity.

As JN.1 spreads, staying informed and taking preventive measures is key. While it shares similarities with other COVID-19 variants, its rapid growth warrants close monitoring.
