A New COVID Variant, JN.1, Is Now Dominant. These Are Its Most Common Symptoms

In recent weeks, the Covid-19 landscape in the United States has seen a significant shift. The Omicron subvariant JN.1 has emerged as the predominant strain, now responsible for a substantial portion of new infections. This development is crucial for everyone to understand, as it impacts public health measures, vaccination strategies, and our collective response to the ongoing pandemic.

    The Rapid Spread of JN.1

According to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), JN.1 accounts for 44.2% of Covid-19 cases in the country. This marks a rapid increase from just a few days prior when it was estimated to cause about 20% of infections. The variant's quick spread is particularly noticeable in the Northeast, making up nearly 57% of new cases.

Global Presence and Public Health Impact

JN.1 is not just a concern in the United States; it has been reported in multiple countries worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) has labeled it a variant of interest due to its rapidly increasing spread.

    Vaccine Effectiveness Against JN.1

There is some good news regarding vaccine effectiveness. JN.1, a descendant of the variant BA.2.86, is expected to be "cross-reactive" with current vaccines. This means that those who are vaccinated should still have a degree of protection against this new variant. BA.2.86 gained attention over the summer due to significant changes in its spike proteins, and JN.1 seems to be following a similar pattern.

    Hospitalization Rates and Healthcare Strain

As of mid-December, Covid-19 has caused seven hospitalizations per 100,000 people, a slight increase from previous weeks. While over three-quarters of US hospital beds are currently in use, this rate aligns with trends observed over the past three years of the pandemic. However, the CDC cautions that an uptick in respiratory virus hospitalizations, including those caused by Covid-19, could put additional strain on healthcare resources.

What are the JN.1 COVID variant symptoms?

The CDC says symptoms of COVID-19 infection as a result of JN.1 remain similar to those from other variants. They may include:

    • Fever or chills.
    • Cough.
    • Sore throat.
    • Congestion or runny nose.
    • Headache.
    • Muscle aches.
    • Difficulty breathing.
    • Fatigue.
    • New loss of taste or smell.
    • "Brain fog" (feeling less wakeful and aware).
    • Gastrointestinal symptoms (upset stomach, mild diarrhea, vomiting).
