Within a mere five years, Ashcroft transformed from a rugged wilderness into a bustling town. It boasted 20 saloons and a population of over 3,500 residents, a remarkable growth for such a short period.

By 1885, the silver veins had been exhausted, and other mining operations nearby began to draw people away. The 1930s brought a new wave of interest to Ashcroft. With the Winter Olympics shining a spotlight on winter sports, there were plans to build a ski resort in the area. However, these plans were never realized, partly due to the outbreak of World War II. The momentum for this project fizzled out, and the town remained largely forgotten.

Ashcroft Today: A Ghost Town Preserved

Today, Ashcroft stands as a ghost town, its quiet streets and abandoned buildings offering a stark contrast to its lively past. The town was eventually transferred to the US Forest Service and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
