This Abandoned Town in Colorado Will Give You the Creeps

    2023-12-26

The story of Ashcroft begins in 1880, when two prospectors, fueled by dreams of wealth, discovered silver in the area. This discovery sparked a rush of excitement, leading to the formation of a Miner's Protective Association.

Within a mere five years, Ashcroft transformed from a rugged wilderness into a bustling town. It boasted 20 saloons and a population of over 3,500 residents, a remarkable growth for such a short period.

However, the prosperity of Ashcroft was not to last. The allure of silver drew many to the town, but as quickly as it rose, it fell. By 1885, the silver veins had been exhausted, and other mining operations nearby began to draw people away. The population plummeted to just 100 residents, marking the beginning of Ashcroft's decline.

By the turn of the century, Ashcroft had transformed yet again. According to the Aspen Historical Society, it became a haven for a small group of aging, single men. These men led simple lives, enjoying hunting, fishing, reading, and the occasional drink. This period paints a picture of a serene, albeit isolated, existence far removed from the town's bustling past.

The 1930s brought a new wave of interest to Ashcroft. With the Winter Olympics shining a spotlight on winter sports, there were plans to build a ski resort in the area. However, these plans were never realized, partly due to the outbreak of World War II. The momentum for this project fizzled out, and the town remained largely forgotten.

Ashcroft Today: A Ghost Town Preserved

Today, Ashcroft stands as a ghost town, its quiet streets and abandoned buildings offering a stark contrast to its lively past. The town was eventually transferred to the US Forest Service and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Efforts have been made to preserve and interpret the town, allowing visitors to revisit and experience a piece of American history.
